“Inspiring Leadership” was the common thread that spoke to both men and women at the IMS2016 WIM event, which was well attended with 80+ joining us. I find it rewarding that now we have full panel sessions, technical tracks, and shoulder-to-shoulder networking receptions of which we can all be proud.

Women in Engineering/Women in Microwaves

Since I first got involved with WIM back in 2011 at IMS in Anaheim, I have seen our society continue to try to do more to elevate, spotlight, and support the role of women in our industry, and each year we do a little better. At IMS2016 this year in San Francisco, we showcased a panel of successful women in our industry, from IEEE fellows to academics to young professionals to senior managers. Starting with a line-up of female IEEE Fellows, we heard from women who have excelled in the field of microwaves, including Dr. Dalma Novak, VP of Engineering at Pharad, LLC where they are developing advanced antennas, RF communications and RF-over-fiber technologies and Dr. Magdalena Salazar Palma, professor in the Department of Signal Theory and Communications, Carlos III University of Madrid, Spain. The talks were followed by a panel session focused on “Leadership: How to Inspire Change.” The panel included women from academia, commercial and defense industries, and a leadership coach and author.

That evening the annual WIM reception/social event was held at the top of the Marriott Marquis Hotel, which included a wine and chocolate pairing and one of the best views the city has to offer.
