Reconfigurable Fractal Devices

Reconfigurable Fractal Devices

Abstract

This article reviews fractal design approaches for multifunctional devices (MFDs) to accomplish reconfigurability for frequency, pattern and polarization. A variety of switching techniques are examined including PIN diodes, varactor diodes, RF-MEMS, slots, switchable feeding, defected ground structure (DGS), energy band gap, coplanar waveguides and arrays. A variety of fractal geometries are examined, reconfiguration and reconfiguration techniques are classified and compared, and the most common applications are identified for each type of reconfiguration. Finally, a variety of fractal devices are explored and compared to set the stage for future research and new innovations.
