Circuit-Loaded Microwave Metadevices: Current State of the Art and Future Directions

Abstract

This article presents an overview of the state-of-the-art and future directions of circuit-loaded microwave metadevices. The integration of metamaterial- and metasurface-devices with circuit components enables practical multifunctional and actively tunable behaviors such as adaptive wave control at the aperture level. A basis for modeling unit cells with lumped, active, nonlinear, and time-varying circuit elements demonstrates a powerful design approach for a broad range of EM responses that cannot be achieved through passive geometries alone. Co-simulation, inverse design and optimization techniques are useful to address new device constraints that are encountered. Future challenges are aimed at developing a new, unified modeling framework.
