Roger W. Sudbury is the former Executive Offi cer at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and currently on the Director’s staff. He led the development of high-frequency solid-state components for active-element phased-array radars, involving the design, development, and fabrication of devices and circuits for microwave transmit/receive modules. While leading the development of GaAs monolithic circuits at the Laboratory, he served as advisor to the government on GaAs multichip transceiver module development. Mr. Sudbury has also served as Associate Manager of Lincoln Laboratory’s Kiernan Re-entry Measurements Site in the Marshall Islands, Kwajalein Atoll, where he was involved in the operation and management of radar and optical data collection experiments. He also held a leadership position responsible for the fi eld operation of the Cobra Eye aircraft with the OAMP sensor, an airborne infrared data-collection platform. He has served for many years on the International Microwave Symposium (IMS) Technical Program Committee and four IMS Steering Committees, and was instrumental in the establishment of the Microwave- and Millimeter-Wave Monolithic Circuits Symposium and served as its 1986 chair. He coordinated the SCR-584 radar operation for the Nova feature “Echoes of War.” For the 1991 IMS in Boston, he edited a reissue of Five Years at the Radiation Laboratory. He served on the Microwave Theory and Techniques (MTT) Society AdCom and has chaired the Technical Coordinating Committee, the Meeting and Symposium Committee, and the Awards Committee, and served as MTT Society President in 2000. He has also served on the Steering Committee of the IEEE International Symposium on Phased Array Systems and Technology and the 2007 Radar Conference. Having served on the IEEE Technical Advisory Board (TAB) and its Strategic Planning and Review Committee, Mr. Sudbury has chaired the IEEE Conference Publications Committee and served on the Electronic Publications Committee and the Products and Services Committee. He was TAB liaison to the Regional Activities Board and vice chair of the IEEE Membership Development Committee. He chaired the Continuing Professional Education Committee, while on the IEEE Education Activities Board. Mr. Sudbury currently serves on the IEEE Board and on its Insurance Committee and Strategic Planning Committee, and chairs the Employee Benefi ts and Compensation Committee.
Mr. Sudbury is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu, and Phi Eta Sigma Honor societies. He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE. A 1956 National Merit Scholar at the Georgia Institute of Technology, he graduated with a B.E.E. with highest honors in 1960, and received S.M. and Engineer (E.E.) degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1963 and 1964. While an instructor in the MIT Electrical Engineering Department, he received a TV Management Shares Teaching Award. From 1964 to 1966, he served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Captain. He grew up in Blytheville, Arkansas, and currently lives in Winchester, Massachusetts, with his wife, Margaret. He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE and member of the IEEE professional groups on Antennas and Propagation, Communications, and Microwave Theory and Techniques.
