Fifth IEEE MTT-S Multilingual Graduate Video Competition in IEEE MTT-S IWS2025
The Multilingual Graduate Video Competition (MVC) was created by the Education Committee of IEEE MTT-S in 2021-2022. It follows a format similar to the 3MT (English) competition in IMS. The MVC aims to support candidates in effectively explaining their research within three minutes, using a language suitable for a non-specialist audience. The goals of MVC include promoting research presentations in students’ native languages, increasing participation rates among different language/cultural backgrounds, expanding MTT-S’s influence in various regions, increasing the visibility of student competition events, and attracting more students to engage in microwave engineering across different regions.
The fifth MVC competition was successfully held at the IEEE MTT-S National Conference on Microwave and Millimeter Waves (NCMMW 2025) in Xi’an, China. The on-site event took place from 13:30 to 15:30 on May 20th. The co-chairs for the event were Prof. Jianjia Yi from Xi’an Jiaotong University, Prof. Yongtao JIA, Xidian University, and Prof. Guangxu Shen from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications.
The competition requires participants to explain microwave technology to a non-specialized audience in Chinese within three minutes, lowering the technical barrier through popularization. This popularization format helps to attract more students and cross-disciplinary researchers to the microwave field. The competition has become a bridge between academic research and public awareness. The significance of the competition is not only to select outstanding talents, but also to promote the microwave technology from the laboratory to the social application, and help the sustainable development of communication, medical and aerospace fields. A total of 24 contestants participated in the competition as the finalists, and finally selected one first prize, two second prizes, and five third prize winners.
The session began with with the moderator welcoming the participants. Then, the IEEE MTT-S Education Committee was introduced. The goal of this committee is to promote MTT-S and microwave technology by appealing to a diverse student body through Multilingual 3MT (MVC). The 24 candidates then took turns on the stage to give their oral presentations. Each participant utilized static slides to introduce a microwave or millimeter-wave technology to the audience within three minutes. Scoring dimensions: depth of technical content (40%), clarity of language (30%), and effectiveness of audience interaction (30%).
The candidates use engaging language and interesting metaphors to gradually simplify complex topics to cater to attendees and get more people outside the microwave mmwave industry interested. The presentation covers a wide range of technologies and knowledge, including phased arrays, mixers, power amplifiers, radar, wireless sensing, and more. After all the contestants finished their presentations, the judges discussed and voted for the contestants according to the scoring criteria.
After the presentation, the expert judges gave their evaluations and recommendations. Participants should realize efficient communication within 3 minutes. In terms of content design, the core of the technology should be broken down by “life-like metaphor + visual diagram”. For visual presentation, the static slide layout of “one page, one core” was adopted. In terms of presentation skills, the narrative rhythm of “opening question – case entry – summarizing value” is used to enhance interactivity. At the same time, it is necessary to strictly control the time, to avoid overtime or terminology piling up, and simulate non-professional audience listening in advance to optimize the expression of logic. At the same time, they also praised the courage of the participants and expressed their continued support and encouragement for the competition.
To conclude the event, Prof. Shen officially announced the end of the competition. After that, the entire MVC judging group took a photo with the participating students in Room Q. The results and award ceremony were held at the banquet the following evening. And, the list of award winners is as follows:
