THz Metal-Mesh Bandpass Filters With Diamond-Shaped Apertures for Sensitive THz Receivers

Abstract

Highly sensitive THz receivers based on superconducting hot-electron bolometer (HEB) mixers require high performance bandpass filters to significantly mitigate the characteristic direct conversion effects of these receivers. The bandpass filters are essential to insulate the HEB mixers from broadband thermal radiation from the calibration load. Novel terahertz (THz) metal-mesh bandpass filters with diamond-shaped apertures are fabricated and evaluated for 1.9, 2.5 and 4.7 THz filters. The metal mesh filters were fabricated from 5 µm thick copper sheet and feature precise center frequency design from 1.5 to 5.5 THz with peak power transmission exceeding 90% and 5%-15% bandwidths.
