Biography

Francesca Apollonio received her Master degree and Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, in 1994 and 1998 respectively. Presently she is a Full Professor with the Department of Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications at Sapienza University, where she teaches courses of electromagnetic fields, biomedical applications of EM fields, biolectromagnetism, EM fields and nanosystems. Her scientific activities mainly concern the interaction of electromagnetic fields with biological systems, with a focus on multiscale modeling, electroporation, smart drug delivery, molecular simulations of complex systems, and dosimetry, including the design and characterization of exposure systems. On these topics, she has authored more than 250 scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and book chapters.

Prof. Apollonio is currently Chair of URSI Commission K, Electromagnetics in Biology and Medicine, and a member of the Board of Directors of the BioEM Society. Since 2022, she has been a member of the IEEE MTT-S Technical Committee TC-28, and since 2020 she has been a member of the Scientific Expert Group of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). She served as Technical Program Committee Chair for BioEM2025 and BioEM2016, as National Representative for COST Action CA15211 from 2016 to 2020, and as a member of the BEMS Board of Directors from 2012 to 2015. At national level, she is member of SIEm (Società Italiana di Elettromagnetismo), ICEMB (Centro Interuniversitario sulle Interazioni tra Campi Elettromagnetici e Biosistemi) and the national URSI Commission K.

She has led and participated in multiple national and European research projects (Horizon Europe, H2020, PRIN) and is the inventor of two patents in the biomedical applications of electromagnetic fields. Professor Apollonio has been invited keynote speaker and lecturer at major IEEE and international conferences (IMBioC, EuMW, BioEM) and has organized and chaired numerous technical sessions worldwide. She has supervised several Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows, as well as numerous bachelor’s and master’s theses, demonstrating her commitment to mentoring the next generation of researchers.
