Back-Off Range Extension Techniques of Doherty Power Amplifiers: Advances for 5G and Beyond
Abstract
Modern 5G and beyond communication systems employ sophisticated modulation schemes with high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) exceeding 10 dB and wide modulation bandwidth to deliver 10 Gb/s and higher rate services, requiring power amplifiers with high output power backoff (OBO) efficiency. This article presents a variety of backoff range extension techniques for Doherty PAs to deliver the required efficiency and bandwidth performance. Discussion encompasses combining current ratio techniques for asymmetric Doherty PAs, carrier power ratio techniques for symmetrical PAs, coordinated regulation of OBO parameters, the load modulation network, harmonic injection, and multiway Doherty PAs.
