Unilateral/Nonreciprocal Filter Design: Recent Advances and Emerging Strategies
Abstract
This article explores advances and emerging strategies for unilateral/nonreciprocal filter design for RF front ends that integrate multiple diverse TR chains in the same module for envisioned 6G applications. Spatiotemporal modulation (SPM) techniques are emerging as attractive alternatives to ferrite and nonmagnetic circulator/isolator implementations. Unilateral SPM transmission techniques are developed that include permittivity, permeability and conductivity modulation. These techniques are extended to the design of high-performing and highly reconfigurable multifunctional unilateral RF filtering devices. Characteristically high insertion loss and limited miniaturization pose substantial challenges to wide-scale implementations. Substantial numerical calculation complexity exists to optimize design tradeoffs.
