Integrated Phased-Array Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave Radar Transceivers on Silicon

Abstract

This article reviews state of the art implementations of integrated phased array FMCW radar in CMOC/BiCMOS silicon. An overview of FMCW radar principles and limitations that implementations face is followed by an examination of potential performance improvements from phased arrays incorporated in the radar design. The integration of a phased array in silicon significantly improves directional capabilities and spatial resolution. An in-depth comparison of state of the art implementations of phased array FMCW radars from 5.8 - 94 GHz is presented, and the article concludes with speculation about future applications and the obstacles and challenges that are likely.
