From Dusk to Dawn: An Industry Perspective on the Transition From 5G to 6G Wireless Communications Infrastructure
Abstract
After 40 years for wireless 5G infrastructures to emerge, the transition to 6G poses new challenges. This article draws upon lessons learned from 4G and 5G to offer fresh industry insights into 6G development and deployment. The vision for 6G will be driven by Open RAN, new spectrum, advanced architectures, new cellular applications, a critical focus on energy efficiency, and next-gen machine-learning-based PA linearization systems, framing 6G as a transformative leap toward ubiquitous connectivity and intelligent networks. 6G will also be underpinned by emerging technologies, such as advanced antenna arrays, joint communications and radar sensing, innovative digital linearization techniques, and more importantly, highly integrated system-on-chip solutions to address cost, complexity, and energy efficiency challenges.
