Close-In Dynamic Range Considerations in Upconverted and Frequency-Multiplied Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave Radars at Ku-Band: Close-In Dynamic Range Considerations in FMCW Radars

Abstract

This article addresses the problem of a bright target obscuring a weak target in modern Ka-band FMCW radar. Frequency-multiplied and upconverted radar architectures are quantitively compared to determine which architecture delivers the best close-in dynamic range performance. The authors determined that the frequency-multiplied architecture suffers from distortion from the frequency synthesizer and DAC multiplied by the PLL with a 20log(n) penalty and is performance-limited by the PLL. The upconverted architecture does not incur this noise penalty and offers 40-50dB better close in dynamic range, but at the expense of about double the circuitry.
