Agile RF Systems for On-Demand Wireless Power Transfer

Abstract

Far field wireless power transfer (WPT) by frequency-diverse arrays (FDAs) and time-modulated arrays (TMAs) feature relatively simple architectures capable of real-time pattern reconfigurability. CW FDAs exploit the intermodulation of signals at slightly different frequencies to enable automatic beam steering capabilities, described by a time dependent S-shaped beam pattern. Pulsed FDAs make use of pulse modulated signals to mitigate the FDA time variability, thus having full control on the beam direction. TMAs make use of individually controlled switched array elements for pulse emissions with different duty cycles and delays, to synthesize a multi-harmonic radiation pattern with many different beam forming configurations. Future machine learning strategies may benefit TMAs, especially if the control of a large number of antennas is required.
