Third IEEE MTT-S Multilingual Graduate Video Competition in IEEE MTT-S IWS2024

The Multilingual Graduate Video Competition (MVC) was created by the Education Committee of IEEE MTT-S in 2021-2022. It follows a format similar to the 3MT (English) competition in IMS. The MVC aims to support candidates in effectively explaining their research within three minutes, using a language suitable for non-specialist audiences. The goals of MVC include promoting research presentations in students’ native languages, increasing participation rates among different language/cultural backgrounds, expanding MTT-S’s influence in various regions, increasing the visibility of student competition events, and attracting more students to engage in microwave engineering across different regions.

The third MVC competition was successfully held at the IEEE MTT-S International Wireless Symposium 2024 (IWS 2024) in Beijing, China. The on-site event took place from 13:30 to 14:50 on May 17th. The co-chairs for the event were Dr. Jianjia Yi from Xi’an Jiaotong University, Dr. Jingzhou Pang from Chongqing University, and Dr. Guangxu Shen from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications. After two rounds of reviews, a total of 16 candidates were recommended as the finalists from 69 submissions, and finally selected one first prize, two second prizes, and five third prize winners.

The session began with Dr. Jianjia Yi welcoming the audience. Following that, Prof. Che and Dr. Guangxu Shen delivered an opening speech, introducing the IEEE MTT-S Education Committee. Prof. Che explained the purpose of the conference and their goal to continue to promote and expand the influence of MVC in China and various regions of the world through IEEE MTT-S. MVC will continue to expand its presence in all regions of the world through four channels: IEEE MTT resource center; Youtube; WeChat; Linkedin. Under The chairmanship of Dr. Yi, the oral competition commenced with 16 candidates taking turns presenting on stage.

Each participant utilized static slides to introduce a microwave or millimeter-wave technology to the audience within three minutes. The candidates use engaging language and interesting metaphors to gradually simplify complex topics to cater to attendees and get more people outside the microwave mm-wave industry interested. The presentation covers a wide range of technologies and knowledge, including phased arrays, mixers, power amplifiers, radar, wireless sensing, and more. Six expert judges scored the entries based on the following aspects :1. Professional: Are the themes and meanings properly communicated to technical people who are not experts in the field? 2. Intelligibility: Did the presentation help the audience understand the research? 3. Engagement: Does the presentation excite the audience?

Following the presentations, six expert judges provided evaluations and suggestions. They put forward suggestions, and encourage the participants.

To conclude the event, the co-chairs officially announced the end of the competition. After that, the entire MVC judging group took a photo with the participating students in Room O. The results and award ceremony were held at the banquet the following evening. And, the list of award winners is as follows:
