IEEE Microwave Magazine – May 2020

About the journal

The May 2020 issue of the IEEE Microwave Magazine is out and presents the events, both technical and social, at the largest gathering of microwave and RF professionals in the world, the IEEE International Microwave Symposium (IMS2020), being held in Los Angeles, CA USA 21-26 June 2020. IMS2020 is a forum where microwave and RF professionals can meet, present, and discuss the most recent advances and practices in this exciting and dynamic field.

In addition of the many columns and descriptions of events at IMS2020, the issue also contains  technical features and columns to inform and challenge you. The issue has three technical features, beginning with the article  “Review of Doherty PAs for 5G Massive MIMO”.  5G is one of the more recent frontiers in our field and this article provides an overview of the widely-used Doherty power amplifier topology for the sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G massive MIMO systems.  Both semiconductor technologies and circuit architectures are compared and analyzed, which is important for 5G since many of the circuits and technologies have not be finalized at this time.  A microwave technology that is getting increasing interest is the use of microwave technology for imaging, which is used to extract information hidden from direct view in applications such as medical diagnostics, through-wall imaging, and for security screening.  The second full technical feature “Advances in Microwave Near-Field Imaging: Prototypes, Systems, and Applications” presents the most recent advances in this exciting field.  This overview describes work that is being done at the finest laboratories in industry and academia that, hopefully, soon, will be developed into commercial products.  The final technical feature is titled, “Towards Reconfigurable Radios Employing Multifunctional Ferroelectrics”.  One of the authors is one of the MTT Society’s Distinguished Microwave Lecturers (DML) and  was inspired by the  DML lecture and presents the use of barium strontium titanate (BST) ferroelectrics for use as resonators in microwave systems.

You will also find several of our regular columns, in addition to those that describe IMS2020.  We have the  MTT President’s column, describing his perspective on IMS2020, as well as the MicroBusiness and Microwave Surfing columns.  Sherry Hess, one of the newest voting members of the MTT Administrative Committee, provides a challenge in the Women in Microwaves column to “Show Up, Speak Up, Step Up”; in other words, become more involved in the Society’s activities.  To challenge your mind on microwaves, a new Enigma is presented, along with last month’s Enigma solution. Finally, we have an In Memoriam column about the tragic loss of two highly regarded members of both the MTT and the Antennas and Propagation communities.
