IEEE Microwave Magazine – September 2019

About the journal

The September issue of the IEEE Microwave Magazine is out. The theme for this issue is putting Theory into Practice. Our industry is continually evolving with biomedical applications, terahertz frequencies, RFID everywhere, RADARs in our cars, and taking advantage of 3D printers. The feature articles in this issue are a tour of how our industry is getting more personal. Our first feature discusses how terahertz frequencies are helping characterize breast tumors. Our second feature gives a comprehensive overview of chipless and chipped RFIDs. And our third feature takes on a tour of how RADARs are now in our cars and making our roads safer. This last article will teach you all about the technical details and application of automotive RADAR. And this issue has an Application Note which looks into how 3D printers are changing waveguide components. What used to be an expensive process of machining away lots of metal can now be an efficient process of building up a component with no loss of material – although surface roughness and conductivity are factors to be considered.

A major part of each issue is the columns. Our first column is always the Editor’s Desk. This column will give you thoughts on the industry and an overview of this issue. Our President’s Column should also be a regular read as it covers what is happening in our society and the impact of those who have left us. The columns in each issue really try to put readers in touch with all aspects of our society. Our MicroBusiness column is always a thought provoking read. This one will either apply to company you are in or will be in so pay attention. Another thoughtful column is Women in Microwaves. This column is a good read for everyone as we are all interested in diversity and drawing more people into this fascinating field. Sadly people leave our field and this month’s In Memoriam is about Renata Bosisio and his diverse career. Our column list does change from issue to issue. One of the columns in most issues is book reviews. In this age of ASICs and FinFETs we have a book describing the benefits of tubes. Our Ombuds Officer is always on the lookout to solve problems and some of these may be informative for you. Finally we have a New Products column in this issue for you to learn more bout what has been developed. And as always, check out the Conference Calendar and enjoy the issue!
