Biography

Vishal Balasubramanian (born in Chennai, India) received his B.Eng. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Anna University, Chennai, India, in 2020. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering at The University of British Columbia, Kelowna, BC, Canada, with a focus on microwave engineering, under the supervision of Prof. Mohammad Zarifi. At UBC, he also works as a sessional lecturer, handling second and third year computer engineering courses. He is also an approval committee member for a student initiative fund.
Prior to his Ph.D., with a focus on mixed reality and medical technologies, he led several industry-collaborated research projects in digital healthcare systems at Capgemini. He is also the principal consultant at Cossian Design Studio at which he has worked with several early-stage startups. Mr. Balasubramanian has received numerous accolades and awards from organizations including Texas Instruments, Canadian Microsystems Corporation, Yunus Centre, and IEEE. In 2024, Vishal was awarded the IEEE MTT-S Graduate Fellowship, and UBC Dean’s Thesis Fellowship, for his research excellence.
He has published his works in prestigious journals like Nature Communications, and has presented in major conferences including IMS, in which he also won the 3MT first place award. He also serves as a reviewer for journals including IEEE Sensors, IEEE Sensors Letters, Computers in Biology and Medicine (Elsevier) and the IEEE Transaction on Industrial Electronics.
