Biography
Sorin P. Voinigescu (Fellow, IEEE) received the M.Sc. degree in electronics from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Bucharest, Romania, in 1984, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada, in 1994. In 2002, he joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, University of Toronto, where he is currently the Stanley Ho Chair in microelectronics and the Director of the VLSI Research Group. From 1994 to 2002, he was first with Nortel and later with Quake Technologies, Ottawa, ON, Canada. In 2008/2009, 2015/2016 and 2022/2023, he spent sabbatical leaves at the Fujitsu Laboratories of America, Sunnyvale, CA, USA, at NTT’s Device Research Laboratories, Atsugi, Japan, at UNSW, Sydney, NSW, Australia, and at Robert Bosch GmbH, Dresden, Germany, exploring FinFET, FDSOI, SiGe BiCMOS and InP HBT technologies, circuits and test methodologies for monolithic quantum processors in silicon, 300-GBaud fiber-optic systems, 100-Gb/s mm-wave radio transceivers, imaging, and radar sensors through 300 GHz. Dr. Voinigescu was a member of the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors RF/AMS Committee from 2008 to 2015 and has served on the TPCs and ExCom for the IEEE CSICS, BCTM, IEDM, IMS, ESSCIRC, and BCICTS. He received Nortel’s President Award for Innovation in 1996 and in 2013 was recognized with the ITAC Lifetime Career Award for his contributions to the Canadian Semiconductor Industry. He was a co-recipient of the Best Paper Award at the 2001 IEEE CICC, the 2005 CSICS, 2018 BCICTS, and the Beatrice Winner Award at the 2008 IEEE ISSCC. His students have won several best student paper awards at the IEEE VLSI Circuits Symposium, IMS, RFIC, ESSCIRC, SiRF, BCTM and BCICTS. He co-founded and was the CTO of Quake Technologies and Peraso Technologies.
