Biography

John Cunningham received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Cambridge in 2000, where he was then a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Cavendish Laboratory and College Fellow at Selwyn College until 2003. Following Royal Academy of Engineering and EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowships at the University of Leeds, he was appointed Reader in High Frequency Electronics and Terahertz Photonics in 2008, and Professor of Nanoelectronics in 2010. At Leeds, he has served as Director of the Institute of Microwaves and Photonics, and Deputy Head of School, and since 2023, Director of Research and Innovation. He leads the EPSRC NetworkPlus in THz Systems and has directed multiple large research programmes in terahertz science and technology. His research focuses on high-frequency electronics and terahertz photonics, and its applications in sensing, and materials characterisation, with a particular interest in quantum materials and devices. He co-edited the 2017 and 2023 International Roadmaps for THz Science and Technology and has held several international scientific advisory roles.
