Women in Microwaves in Niš, Serbia

This first WiM column of 2025 gives a brief overview of WiM Serbia and its technical and professional activities!

Serbia has a strong tradition in science and engineering, and there are certainly talented women engineers who have made significant contributions in various fields, including microwaves, electronics, and telecommunications. Thirty-five years ago, a group of professionals who were already Members of IEEE, headed by Dr. Branka Jokanović, came together with a shared passion and a common goal: to create a community where knowledge in the field of microwaves could be shared and nurtured, and further, to contribute to advancement in the field. Their dedication and foresight laid the foundation for what has become the cornerstone of a local IEEE Microwave and Technology Society (MTT-S) Chapter. The current MTT-S Chapter of Serbia and Montenegro IEEE Section is the successor to the Yugoslav MTT-S Chapter, which was founded on 26 June 1989. The person most responsible for the founding of the Chapter is Dr. Jokanović, who, on Olga Borić-Lubecke’s initiative and with Martin Schneider’s support, and under very difficult conditions in the country, organized the signing of the petition and served as the first Chapter chair.
