It is with deep regret that I inform you of the passing of Dr. Earl McCune, one of our distinguished MTT-S members, on the 27th of May 2020.
Dr. Earl McCune received his BS degree from UC Berkeley, MS degree from Stanford and Ph.D. from UC Davis. In his nearly 40 years of experience in wireless communications industry, he worked in areas including technology development, circuit design, systems architecture and integration. He was a Silicon Valley entrepreneur who founded two groundbreaking technology companies that both provided successful exits to the investors: Digital RF Solutions merged with Proxim and Tropian acquired by Panasonic. At the time of his passing, Dr. McCune was a Professor at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, as well as CTO and cofounder of Eridan Communications, Inc., California, USA. Dr. McCune held more than 90 US patents, authored two books and published many articles.
Dr. McCune was a very active member of our society. He was a frequent invited speaker and served on the TPC for many international conferences including IMS, RWW and WAMICON. He was a Distinguished Microwave Lecturer and a Fellow of IEEE. He served as the Chair of the IEEE Standards Working Group on Energy Efficient Communication Hardware and was actively involved in the IEEE Future Networks Initiative’s International Roadmap for Network Generations (INGR) and 5G World Forum. His passing is a great loss to MTT-S and the IEEE community.
