The wireless industry seems to have unlimited growth potential as the next generation of technology proliferates across the airwaves. The rollout of any new generation of mobile network technology is never as simple as flicking on a light switch. The insatiable demand for wireless connectivity in our surroundings has skyrocketed in the last decade and even more so in the last few years. The adoption of 5G is set to soar in the next 5 years, largely due to the surging adoption of internet enabled devices connected throughout the world by the Internet of Things (IoTs). Growing usurpation of mobile broadband as well as growing machine-to-machine communication in the telecommunications industry is also expected to fuel the global 5G technology market size over the forecast period.

The 18th annual IEEE Wireless and Microwave Technology Conference (WAMICON) 2017 will be held in Cocoa Beach, Florida on April 24-25, 2017. The conference aims to address up-to-date multidisciplinary research needs and interdisciplinary aspects of wireless and RF technology. This year’s central theme focus on “Emerging Technologies for 5G systems”, which has certainly started to hit the headlines and tech-geek seems to be talking about it. The trending technologies revolve around the following components: Power Amplifiers, Semiconductors, Software for 5G wireless communication and Internet of Things, etc.

The 5G market will grow to $1.23 trillion by 2026”, per a new report by Ericsson announced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona on 27th February 2017. Media commentators and industry experts alike are making bold predictions about how 5G’s interdependence on various other technologies, such as millimeter wave propagation will support the vast number of IoT networks. It is due to a conception that 5G allows a greater volume of connections than current 4G networks. Meanwhile, we are still facing issues with 3G and 4G networks, so the move to 5G will not be as smooth as some might think. For the phenomenon to be a true success, operators must be prepared to maintain enough capacity in the core network and manage the conceptions to it without creating bottlenecks. This leads to a growing demand for the qualified engineers across all segments of the supply chain from carrier to chip manufacturers.

It is often said that “The art of communication is the language of leadership”. The IEEE MTT-S Young Professionals in Microwave will be organizing an industrial forum to provide you a platform to share your knowledge with others, directly speak and network with the executives of the wireless industry to give a kick-start to your career in the right direction.

RF Technologies- Next Big Opportunities for Young Professionals

The forum focuses on addressing the future trends and technologies that will shape next-generation RF solutions in the era of 5G and IoTs. This is a good opportunity for young professionals to interact with panelists who are leaders in the RF field and learn from them the importance of research and course versus practical experiences. The panel will aid on how young professionals can develop and acquire the necessary skill set to face the upcoming RF industrial challenges and opportunities.

A look at the panelists:

a. Gernot Fattinger: Ph.D., Director of BAW R&D at Qorvo Inc.

Qorvo is one of the world’s leading suppliers of core RF building blocks. As band counts rise and best-in-class filter performance is required, Qorvo leverages its advanced filter technologies, such as LowDrift and NoDrift bulk acoustic wave (BAW) to help tackle the industry’s toughest interference problems.

b. Jessica Coots: M.S.E.E., Engineering Manager of the RF and Antenna at Harris Corporation

Harris Corporation has recently introduced the Falcon III RF-300H, the world’s smallest, lighest and fastest wideband manpack radio. It provides more security and enhanced wideband HF than any other radio in the marketplace.

c. Josh Caron: Ph.D., Senior Engineering Manager of RF Filters at Skyworks Solutions Inc.

Wireless connectivity front-end modules (FEMs) by Skyworks Solutions, Inc., are being leveraged by Broadcom Corporation for use in several of the company’s 5G Wifi solutions, enabling some of the fastest download speeds available in access points, routers, DSL/cable gateways, PCs, smartphones, and tablets.

d. Quenton Bonds: Ph.D., Research Electronics Engineer at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

High-rate RF communications techniques are essential to meeting projected future mission requirements. There’s abundant research possibilities to investigate new methods that would allow current radio systems to accommodate the ever-increasing need to reliably move more bits between deep space and Earth.
