Biography

Yukio Kawano received the M. S. degree in basic science and engineering from University of Tokyo in 1998, and the Ph.D. degree in solid-state physics and engineering from the University of Tokyo in 2001. He worked as an assistant professor at the Department of Physics, University of Tokyo in 2001–2006 and as a Research Scientist at RIKEN during the period 2006–2011. He moved to the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2011. His current position is associate professor at the Tokyo Tech. His research interests include THz sensing and imaging (highly sensitive and frequency-tunable THz detector, near-field THz imaging), scanning probe microscopy (scanning electrometer, scanning noise sensor), and their application to materials research.

IBM Science Prize (2011); “Development of THz sensing and imaging based on nano-electronic structures”.

Sir Martin Wood Prize (2011), “THz wave detection based on low-dimensional electron systems”.

Challenging Research President’s Honorary Award (2011), “High-resolution THz imaging”.

The Young Scientists’ Prize, the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (2009), “Study of terahertz imaging in the nano-device engineering”.

Research Award of the Research Foundation for Opto-Science and Technology (2009), “Development of on-chip near-field THz imaging devices”.

Young Scientist Award of the Physical Society of Japan (2008), “Imaging of THz radiation and voltage in quantum Hall systems”.

Young Scientist Award for the Presentation of an Excellent Paper (2007), (from The Japan Society of Applied Physics), “Observation of THz photon sidebands in a carbon nanotube quantum dot”.
