Terahertz Generation in Nonlinear Crystal Powders

Terahertz Generation in Nonlinear Crystal Powders

Abstract

Optical rectification (OR) and second harmonic generation (SHG) occur simultaneously to generate terahertz waves when intense electromagnetic waves interact with noncentrosymmetric materials or nonlinear crystal powders such as powdered sugar. A 5W 800-nm wavelength laser with a 45 fs pulse at a 1 KHz repetition rate illuminated 200 µm and 400 µm thick sugar tablets through a chopper power control and a lens. A ZnTe 2 mm crystal was also utilized in the apparatus to compare to the sugar. The best experimental results from the sugar showed that a linearly polarized electromagnetic field was generated with a signal spectrum up to 3 THz with a 40 dB dynamic range.
