IMS 2009 in Boston

On behalf of the IMS2009 Steering Committee, I invite you to participate in IMS2009. We plan to make IMS2009 and microwave week memorable, and we hope to include you. IMS2009 will be in Boston and promises to be exceptional. We have always set records in Boston, and we plan to do it again. But we aren't resting on our laurels. We also plan to continue Boston's tradition of innovation. We are working hard to make IMS2009 the best possible experience for all participants - authors, technical attendees, trade show attendees, exhibitors, guests and even people that aren't able to attend. You'll find information on some exciting innovations at ims2009.org, and we'll post updates frequently. Make sure you visit our website often to learn what is new!

Now is the time to start thinking about technical contributions. If you want to submit a paper, the deadline is 8 December. Make sure you review the Call for Papers, available at ims2009.org. If you have never submitted a paper before, I encourage you to try. The Call for Papers has critical information on what to submit and how to submit. You can also submit ideas for Workshops, Panel Sessions, Special Sessions and Short Courses. The deadline for proposals is 19 September. You'll find details at our website. When you visit ims2009.org, be sure to sign up for the IMS Insider, a monthly newsletter that will keep you up to day on the latest IMS2009 information.

See you in Boston next June!

General Chair of IMS2009

IMS2009 Upcoming Deadline for Proposals

Special technical forums provide an important component of the International Microwave Symposium. We've all sat through good events and bad events. Here is your chance to give us your ideas for a good event and make sure your interests are highlighted. Proposals are solicited for Workshops, Short Courses, Panel/Rump Sessions and Focus/Special Sessions and are due by 19 September 2008. Follow the links for each item or go to www.ims2009.org to learn more about these and other IMS2009 developments.

General Chair of IMS2009

IMS2016 in San Francisco, IMS2017 in Honolulu.

At the June meeting of the IEEE MTT-S Administrative Committee (AdCom), the selection for the host city of the International Microwave Symposium (IMS) is made. The selection process occurs over several months and culminates in a presentation by the prospective host cities and an AdCom vote. This year two cities (Honolulu, HI, and San Francisco, CA) were selected. San Francisco will host the IMS in 2016, the general chair being Amarpal (Paul) Khanna, followed by Honolulu hosting the IMS in 2017, the general chair being Kevin Miyashiro. On behalf of the general chairs, we look forward to you attending the conference.

Chairman, IMS Site Inspection and Negotiating Committee

8th Workshop on Computational Electromagnetics in Time-Domain (CEM-TD 2009)

The University of Victoria, Victoria, B.C., Canada, will be hosting the 8th Workshop on Computational Electromagnetics in Time-Domain, CEM-TD 2009. The workshop is scheduled for June 16-18, the week following IMS 2009 in Boston. The main objectives of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners from around the globe to exchange new ideas and experiences in time domain electromagnetic modeling; to stimulate the development of novel time domain algorithms and their applications to realistic and challenging problems, and to further the development of an open source computational electromagnetics system. The workshop will consist of invited special talks, contributed presentations and poster sessions. Paper Submission is January 31, 2009.

Welcome to New Associate Editor of Microwave Magazine E-Newsletter

I would like to officially welcome Dr. Ryan Miyamoto as the Associate Editor of the Microwave Magazine e-Newsleter. Dr. Miyamoto has actually been performing this role for a few months now. You will notice a much more professional look to this September 2008 issue of the e-Newsletter and you might also notice changes that you suggested to us in our recent membership survey. These are the direct result of Ryan's efforts.

Dr. Miyamoto is a Senior RF Research Engineer responsible for the technical direction of Oceanit's Radar/ECM programs and managing multiple programs in RF system development and application sponsored by the DoD, including sensors and electronic warfare. He serves as a reviewer for various technical journals including the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques. He has been a member of the IMS Technical Program Committee since 2005, and has chaired the TPC Subcommittee on Smart Antennas and Phased Arrays (SC 29). He was a recipient of the ISAP Award presented at 2000 International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation (ISAP). Dr. Miyamoto received his PhD in electrical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2002.

I hope you will join me welcoming Dr. Miyamoto to the position, and I hope you are as pleased with the results as I am.
